Information Society is turning 20 this year, its main asset being its experience and know-how, as for these past 20 years it has supported the Public Administration bodies and the wider public sector in the implementation of landmark ICT projects, and it is now the Project Office of the Ministry of Digital Governance and in charge of implementing the actions of the National Digital Strategy.

It continues its course contributing greatly to the digital transformation of public administration and to the digital reformation of the existing Administrative Structures, as it became emphatically clear even in the difficult conditions that we have all been experiencing in the past six months due to the pandemic. Information Society, with its citizen-centric philosophy, managed to serve in an ideal way the basic need of citizens in terms of the immediate processing of their cases in relation to the State without their physical presence.

Information Society is now on a steady growth trajectory, currently managing 172 public works contracts in various stages of maturity, with a budget of approximately 2.3 billion euro, as well as state aid actions with a budget exceeding 300 million euro. In total, the budget of the projects and actions managed by the company is over 2.6 billion euro.

Projects such as Syzefxis II, the Human Resources Management system (HRMS), Transparency III (“Diavgeia”), the Teleconferencing services in courts and penitentiary establishments (“Tele-trial”), the Digital Information Centre, the National Codification Portal, the Redesign, Simplification & Modelling of the workflow of the National Printing House, the Integrated Information System for the management and monitoring of PPP projects and the singe digital service platform for citizens and businesses (CRMS) are just some of the interventions whose primary purpose is the simplification of procedures in the public sector.

In fact, after the recent launch of tenders for five major projects which are expected to contribute decisively to the improvement of the Public Sector’s operation – I am referring to Government ERP, Transformation of Consular Services Procedures, Information System for the Licensing of RES Projects (PSAPE), Information System of the Hellenic Data Protection Authority (DPA) and Teleconferencing Services in Courts and Penitentiary Establishment (“Tele-trial”) – a new series of tenders will follow until October, according to our planning, in relation to about 30 projects / interventions in Public Administration, with a total budget amounting to approximately 134 million euro.

The modernization of the Integrated Information System of the Legal Council of the State, the development of the organizational operation of the Special Secretariat for Private Debt Management (EGDIX) for the provision of innovative services to support the viability of small and medium-sized enterprises, the Integrated Information Systems for Health and Shipping, the compliance with the GDPR regulation for the protection of personal data of Public Bodies and the G-Cloud Next Generation are just a few “links in the chain” of digital projects, which Information Society is called upon to implement for the digital transformation of the Public Sector in the near future.

However, a big challenge for the Information Society team is undoubtedly the projects that will be financed by the Recovery Fund. According to the current data, Information Society is expected to manage almost 40 ICT projects from the Recovery Fund, with a total budget amounting to approximately 2.1 billion euro. Therefore, in a year or so from now, Information Society will be managing a project portfolio amounting to a total of approximately 4.7 billion euro!

A particularly wide range of digital interventions is provided for by the recovery fund, relating to all sectors of society and the economy. Thus, the digital reforms, which gather a large share of the Recovery Fund’s resources, aim primarily to the upgrading of the Health, Education, Justice, Tourism, Agriculture and Shipping services, Telecommunications infrastructure, as well as the services of the central public administration etc.

In fact, Information Society also undertook the implementation of one of the first pan-European programmes financed by the Recovery Fund, the “Digital Care” programme, with a total budget of 130 million euro, concerning the support of families with dependent children (pupils or students) for the purchase of technological equipment through a voucher with a value of two hundred (200.00) euro, aiming to achieve an inclusive digital model in education. And this is just the beginning of all the interventions that are expected to follow by the Recovery Fund, based on the provisions that have been made for…

The digital transformation of:

Health, with the digitization of the Public Health System, the electronic patient file, the digital readiness of hospitals and the strengthening of telemedicine

Justice, with the creation of the National Integrated System of Electronic Justice (e-justice)

Education, including, among others, the digitization of educational material and content, by developing infrastructure in all classrooms for interactive teaching and digital services in schools (e-school) and universities (e-university)

At the same time, a series of projects are being developed that will further redefine the relationship of the Public Sector with citizens and businesses, concerning

  • Smart Cities
  • New Digital public services and modernization of the state
  • Digital Transformation of shipping
  • Digital Transformation of the agricultural sector
  • Digital Transformation of the Land Registry
  • Interoperability and development of web services for Local & Central Administration
  • New public procurement system
  • Tourist register
  • Digital Transformation of the Greek National Tourism Organization
