The service of the European Emergency Call Number “112” is upgraded with the possibility of sending more data to “eCall” calls automatically from vehicles in case of an accident, through the Memorandum of Cooperation co-signed by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Giannis Kefalogiannis, the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management, Mr. Nikos Chardalias and the CEO of the Information Society, Mr. Stavros Asthenidis

The aim of the Memorandum is to interconnect the “112” Emergency Call Management System with the vehicle registration database maintained by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to provide data oneCallcalls.

An “eCall” call is considered to be an emergency call from the vehicle based on the number “112”. In the event of an accident, vehicles equipped with this technology will automatically inform “112” by sending a message with the vehicle’s details and location.

Basically, with the implementation of the project, when a car is involved in an accident, it will be able to send a message to “112” through an automatic system, without requiring the action of the driver or a passenger, who may not be able to communicate.

The service can also be used by the driver in cases where he or she is disoriented or needs assistance.

Today, during an eCall, the in-vehicle ITS device automatically sends a minimum set of data, including the vehicle’s location (based on the GPS of the ITS device), chassis number, fuel and vehicle make/model, among others.

The Memorandum of Collaboration will ensure access to the “112” communication protocol with the database of the Ministry of Transport, so that the following data will be provided with the “eCall” call:

  • Vehicle Registration Number
  • Framework number
  • Vehicle Code
  • Car description
  • Vehicle make
  • Commercial Name of Vehicle
  • Colour
  • Fuel
  • Date of first authorisation
  • Date of first international licence

Please note that no personal data, such as the full name of the owner, will be sent.

For the implementation of the project, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will provide access to the vehicle data database it maintains, while the Ministry of Citizen Protection, through its contractor OTE SA, will develop the interconnection of the database with the 112 Emergency Call Management System.
